Groundhog Day 2024

Early this morning we traveled to Myerstown to observe the Grundsau Lodsch Nummer Siwwezeh am Union Kanaal (Groundhog Lodge Number 17 on the Union Canal) consult with their groundhog “Uni” (named for the “Uni”on Canal) make his fearless prognostication on the arrival of Spring.

In the video above the forecast is given in Pennsylvania German, which all local groundhogs appear to be fluent in. For the language challenged the video below is presented in English.

Wish You Were Here

I’n not there either, I’m not gambling so I’m home like any sensible person would be during a pandemic.

Among my too many collections I have a large stack of unsent postcards accumulated by me and generations of family before me. I could never find takers for the collection so I decided to force it one at a time on unsuspecting friends and acquaintances. Throughout this month or more I’m going to write one a day if I can and send them randomly with short messages either serious or not, since the post cards vary as well. Some are intentionally funny or strange and others weren’t intended to be that, but time has altered their meaning. It’s also my way of supporting the post office, though I’m also using some very old stamps that were paid for in the previous century.

If you want to be sure to get one please message or email me… or send me a request on a postcard.

Spring Background

Wanted to create a background for my computer to celebrate Spring and found this photo from Damariscotta Lake in Maine where we literally watched the ice leave last Spring. Missing that scene for sure out the window, so on the computer is the next best thing.

To use this yourself right click on the image and select “save image as…” to your computer. Then just install it as wallpaper to your desktop as usual. Remember to click on the Backgrounds tab at the right to see the others available.

Magical Mystery Tour Frederick

Craig, Gath, and Duncan discuss Gath’s lack of color in his writings.

The playlist for our April 2019 Magical Mystery Tour to Frederick MD.

  1. Dublin Roasters’ Coffee – Great coffee, best according to Craig.
  2. One Million Liter Test Sphere – Weren’t there, just near and forgot to mention it at coffee because the great conversation distracted me.
  3. Spook Hill – The soldiers DID push our car… forward AND backward.
  4. National War Correspondents Memorial Arch – And Gapland or Gathland, or both as the sign above states.
  5. Washington Monument State Park
  6. Exotic Lumber – No one had to have a board on their head for the rest of the trip. I bought only short pieces.
  7. Record Exchange – What??? No Uriah Heep? But loved the new vinyl.
  8. Earthly Elements – Great rock shop with commemorative dino coins.
  9. White Rabbit Gastropub – Great secret spot hidden in an alley.

Magical Mystery Tour Bethlehem

April Fool’s day came a day late when our Magical Mystery Tour plans were a bit altered, but not cancelled. Some outside stops, though listed here, where not made and the cemetery tour was a drive-through, although we were briefly convinced that the gate we had driven through was locked behind us.

Craig takes a ride in the propane exhibit.

Duncan checks out the big machines at NMIH.

Magical Mystery Tour Lancaster County

On June 26 Craig, Duncan, and I traveled to the following locations to see the sites and some graves of my ancestors who lived in those areas.

The Postcard Bldg

Newcomer’s Corner

Magical Mystery Tour Baltimore

IMG_3265We departed from our usual Monday tour and went on a Tuesday in order to visit the Museum on Industry in Baltimore and see the Linotype there. It was, in fact, a relatively normal tour, normal in the way that it was NOT like our usual… unusual spots tours. It was non-the-less a great day pretty much spent in two museums that are very much worth the visit. It was especially good visiting the B&O with Craig in tow, who has become a walking database of train history and who was able to answer our questions and point out unusual aspects of the collection even better than the local docents there.

We visited:

2016 Thoreau Society AG

IMG_3141I attended the Thoreau Society Annual Gathering once again in Concord, MA. Enjoyed a number of sessions and many of the special tours. Stayed with Ben & Erica in nearby Belmont and was able to take Ben on the Sunday morning paddle on the Sudbury.

2016 NAGT Eastern Section Meeting

Mastodon photo

Jolene poses with a Mastodon in the Paleo Lab at the Carnegie Museum.

Everyone was treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the Carnegie Museum at the 2016 Eastern Section NAGT meeting near Pittsburgh. Thanks to Mike Baer, who planned the meeting and outings with help from Amy Baer. Mike is now Section President (woo-hoo) leaving me as Past President.
